Quick Answer

Shipping a car to or from Arizona typically runs $500–$900 from Southern California, $900–$1,300 from Texas and the Great Plains, and $1,000–$1,500 from the Midwest and Pacific Northwest — for example, Los Angeles to Phoenix is typically $500–$900 and Chicago to Phoenix $1,100–$1,500. Most in-state moves take 1–2 days; cross-country shipments take 3–6 days.

Shipping a car in Arizona, without the runaround

Arizona ships cars in both directions all year long — but the rhythm is unmistakably seasonal. Winter visitors arrive from the Midwest and the Northeast every fall, spring training fills the Phoenix metro every February and March, and relocations follow the state's steady growth in between. Whatever brings the car here — or sends it out — the pattern is the same: it needs to get there safely and on a schedule.

That's the job we do at Freedom Transport Service. We're a nationwide auto transport broker with a 100% USA-based team — real people who answer the phone, no outsourced call centers — and a network of vetted, insured carriers running Arizona lanes every day. We're open 6 days a week, and the way we price is simple: no bait-and-switch.

Most Arizona shipments fall into a handful of buckets. Snowbirds — seasonal residents who spend the winter in Phoenix, Scottsdale, Mesa, and Tucson — ship cars south in the fall and back north in the spring rather than driving both ways. Job relocations move families between the Phoenix and Tucson metros and the coasts, the Midwest, and Texas. Military families ship on PCS orders to and from Luke Air Force Base, Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Fort Huachuca, and MCAS Yuma. Students send cars to Arizona State, the University of Arizona, and Northern Arizona University in the fall and home again in the spring. Add Cactus League spring training, Scottsdale's collector-car auctions, online purchases, and dealer trades, and you get a state where carriers run full, frequent routes — which is good news for your price and your schedule.

We ship daily drivers, family SUVs, and pickup trucks; classics and exotics (enclosed, always recommended); motorcycles and golf carts (enclosed only, for full protection); UTVs — Arizona's off-road toys ship with us constantly; and vans and heavy-duty trucks, which our team quotes individually. If it rolls, we can almost certainly move it.

Popular routes to Arizona

These are the lanes booked most often into Arizona, with the typical ranges we see for a standard sedan in running condition. Your exact price depends on the specific pickup and delivery cities and ZIPs, the vehicle, and your dates — the ranges below are honest planning numbers, not a quote. Season is a factor too: prices run higher when demand peaks — snowbird season in the fall and spring, the summer moving season, and the year-end holidays — and lower in quieter months. Every lane below has a full route guide with lane-specific detail.

Popular routes from Arizona

Leaving Arizona — or sending a car out to family, a buyer, or a second home — runs on the same busy corridors in reverse. Spring is the big outbound season, when winter visitors ship cars back to the Midwest; summer brings relocations out of the Phoenix metro in every direction. Two of the most-booked outbound lanes have full route guides:

Shipping within Arizona

Plenty of Arizona shipping never leaves Arizona. Phoenix to Tucson is about 115 miles down I-10; Phoenix to Flagstaff is about 145 miles up I-17 — short hops by cross-country standards, but still hours of desert driving each way, and still miles you'd rather keep off a car you care about. In-state moves are constant here: job transfers between the Phoenix and Tucson metros, cars bought from a seller across the state, second vehicles headed to a vacation home in Sedona, Prescott, or the White Mountains, and dealer trades moving inventory between rooftops.

In-state moves are also the fastest thing we do. On the main corridors, carriers run daily, pickup is usually quick, and most in-state shipments deliver in 1–2 days. Because Arizona's in-state lanes are short, they're also among the lowest-priced shipments we book — open and enclosed carriers both work these lanes, and your free quote prices your exact cities, vehicle, and dates.

The Arizona car shipping guide

Shipping the car is the easy part. Owning it legally at the other end — and getting it through an Arizona summer — takes a little local knowledge. Here's what we tell every customer moving a vehicle into, out of, or across the state.

Registering your car after a move to Arizona

New residents must register their vehicle with the Arizona Department of Transportation's Motor Vehicle Division (ADOT MVD) within 15 days of establishing residency. Registration starts with a title application, and vehicles moving in from another state generally need a VIN inspection — most are quick Level I inspections handled at MVD or authorized third-party offices. If you're moving to the Phoenix or Tucson metro areas, the car must pass an emissions test first (more on that below). Don't let the 15-day clock sneak up on you: if your car ships a week after you do, handle registration as soon as it arrives.

Emissions testing in the Phoenix and Tucson metros

Arizona requires emissions testing only in the Phoenix and Tucson metro areas — the two parts of the state covered by air-quality programs run through the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality. If you register in either metro, your vehicle has to pass an emissions inspection before registration; vehicles registered elsewhere in Arizona don't need one. Cars that passed easily in another state occasionally need a little attention first (an aging catalytic converter or an EVAP leak will fail emissions), so build in a few days of cushion before your 15-day deadline.

Insurance minimums

Arizona law requires minimum liability coverage of 25/50/15 — $25,000 per injured person, $50,000 per accident, and $15,000 for property damage. If your current policy was written in a state with different minimums, your insurer will adjust it when you update your garaging address. (While your car is on one of our carriers, it's covered by the transport insurance included with every shipment.)

No toll roads in Arizona

Arizona has no toll roads — not one. It's one less thing to worry about when your car ships: there are no Arizona toll charges to pause, and no transponder is needed anywhere in the state. If your car carries a toll tag from another state (an E-ZPass or a TxTag, say), remove it before pickup anyway — a tag left in the car can keep charging your account if the carrier's route passes toll points in other states along the way.

The corridors carriers actually run

Two interstates do most of the work in Arizona, with a third across the north. I-10 runs from Southern California through Phoenix and Tucson to New Mexico and Texas — the state's main east–west carrier artery. I-17 climbs from Phoenix to Flagstaff, gaining more than a mile of elevation on the way. I-40 crosses northern Arizona through Flagstaff, Winslow, and Holbrook between California and New Mexico, and I-8 ties Yuma to the Phoenix area via Gila Bend. If your pickup or delivery sits on or near one of these corridors, scheduling is fast and pricing is at its best. Off-corridor addresses — mountain towns, the far corners of the state — simply need a little more lead time.

Summer heat, open vs. enclosed

Phoenix summers regularly run 100–115°F, and Tucson isn't far behind. On an open carrier, your car rides through days of intense sun — fine for a daily driver, and what the vast majority of Arizona shipments use. For a classic, an exotic, a fresh paint job, or anything with a soft top, enclosed transport keeps the car sealed away from the heat and desert dust entirely. Either way, Arizona's Department of Transportation reminds drivers every summer that heat is hard on vehicles: it evaporates battery fluid and speeds corrosion, strains coolant, and changes tire pressure — test the battery, top off the coolant, and check tire pressure before pickup, and never leave anything heat-sensitive inside the vehicle.

Snowbird season and spring training

Arizona's shipping calendar has two peaks. From October through November, winter visitors ship cars south from the Midwest, the Northeast, and Canada; from March through May, they ship them back. In between, Cactus League spring training fills ten ballparks across the Phoenix metro every February and March, and Scottsdale's winter collector-car auctions draw enclosed carriers from all over the country. If you're shipping with the snowbird flow, book early — southbound fall capacity out of the Midwest goes first. Shipping against the flow often prices better.

Military moves & college shipping

Two groups ship more cars in Arizona than anyone else — and both move on somebody else's calendar, which makes planning ahead worth real money.

Military & PCS moves

Arizona hosts major installations across the state, and we ship to and from all of them:

  • Luke Air Force Base (Glendale) — the Air Force's primary fighter-pilot training base
  • Davis-Monthan Air Force Base (Tucson) — A-10s and the aircraft Boneyard
  • Fort Huachuca (Sierra Vista) — the Army's intelligence and technology hub
  • MCAS Yuma — Marine Corps air training on the California line

Carriers can't always enter the installation itself, so pickup or delivery usually happens at a visitor center or a convenient spot just outside the gate — we coordinate that with you in advance. Ask about our military pricing when you book.

Students & families

Shipping a car to campus beats a two-day drive and a flight home. We serve every major Arizona school, including:

  • Arizona State University (Tempe) — one of the largest enrollments in the country
  • University of Arizona (Tucson)
  • Northern Arizona University (Flagstaff) — plus Grand Canyon University in Phoenix

Book fall and spring moves early — the first and last weeks of the semester are the busiest of the year. Ask about student pricing when you book.

Special pricing — just ask

We offer special pricing for select groups, including military members, students, seasonal travelers, and healthcare professionals. Mention it when you request your quote and we'll apply whatever you're eligible for.

Open vs. enclosed transport in Arizona

Open transport is the standard multi-car carrier you see on every interstate — and it's the right choice for most Arizona shipments. It's the most affordable option, the easiest to schedule, and every shipment includes insurance coverage in transit either way. Daily drivers, family vehicles, trucks, and SUVs ship open every day of the year.

Enclosed transport puts your vehicle inside a covered trailer, protected from weather, sun, dust, and road debris. Arizona makes the case for enclosed better than most states: summer runs cross hundreds of miles of 110-degree heat and blowing desert dust, and monsoon season can add sudden storms in July and August. For classics, exotics, collectibles, show cars, and anything with significant value or fresh paint, enclosed is the honest recommendation — and for motorcycles and golf carts, enclosed is the only way we ship them. Expect enclosed to run roughly 40–60% more than open on the same lane, as the tables above show.

Not sure which fits your car? Tell us what you're shipping when you get your quote and we'll give you a straight answer — including when open is all you need.

What affects your Arizona price

Four things drive the number on any Arizona lane:

  • Distance. The biggest factor, always. Phoenix to Chicago is about 1,750 miles; Phoenix to Los Angeles is about 370. Longer hauls cost more in total but less per mile.
  • Corridor vs. rural pickup. Addresses on I-10, I-17, I-40, and I-8 sit on routes carriers already run, so they price at the best rates and schedule fastest. Mountain towns, Verde Valley addresses, and rural pickups may need a carrier to detour, which costs more and takes a little longer to arrange.
  • Vehicle size and condition. A compact sedan is the baseline. Full-size trucks, large SUVs, and vans take more deck space and weight; non-running vehicles need a winch and extra handling. Heavier and larger prices higher.
  • Season and direction. Fall fills up with snowbirds heading south and spring fills with them heading home; spring training and summer relocations keep Phoenix busy in between. Booking a little ahead of the rush — or shipping against it — usually prices better.

The ranges on this page are typical planning numbers — get your free quote for your specific addresses, vehicle, and dates. No bait-and-switch, ever.

Preparing your car for pickup

A few simple steps before the carrier arrives make pickup smooth — and protect you if anything comes up in transit.

  • Keep the tank about a quarter fullThat's plenty for loading and unloading, without the extra weight of a full tank.
  • Remove personal itemsCarriers aren't insured for belongings left inside the vehicle, so clear out anything you can't replace.
  • Wash the car before pickupA clean car makes the pre-shipment inspection photos accurate, so existing marks are documented clearly.
  • Note existing damage with the driverWalk the car together at pickup and make sure it's recorded on the bill of lading before you sign.
  • Disable alarms and remove toll tagsIt prevents surprise alarms in transit and toll charges piling up along the way.
  • Have a spare key readyThe driver needs a working key for loading and unloading at both ends.

How much does it cost to ship a car from California to Arizona?

Los Angeles to Phoenix typically runs $500–$900 open and $800–$1,400 enclosed, taking 1–2 days. San Diego to Phoenix prices the same. It is one of the busiest lanes in the Southwest, so scheduling is usually fast — get a free quote for your specific addresses.

How much does it cost to ship a car within Arizona?

In-state Arizona moves are among the shortest shipments we book — Phoenix to Tucson is about 115 miles, Phoenix to Flagstaff about 145 — and they price at the low end of our range, with delivery in 1–2 days. Because your vehicle, dates, and exact cities move the number, get a free quote for your specific in-state lane.

How long does Arizona car shipping take?

Most in-state moves take 1–2 days. Southern California lanes run 1–2 days, Texas and the Great Plains run 2–4 days, and Midwest and Pacific Northwest lanes run 3–6 days depending on the lane. Your carrier confirms a pickup window when you book and keeps you updated in transit.

Do I need to register my car after moving to Arizona?

Yes. New Arizona residents must register their vehicle through the ADOT Motor Vehicle Division within 15 days of establishing residency. Vehicles moving in from out of state generally need a VIN inspection, and if you are settling in the Phoenix or Tucson metro areas, the car must pass an emissions test first. You will also need Arizona liability insurance of at least 25/50/15.

Can I ship a car to a military base in Arizona?

Yes — we ship to and from Luke Air Force Base, Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Fort Huachuca, MCAS Yuma, and other Arizona installations regularly. Because carriers usually can't enter the installation, pickup or delivery typically happens at a visitor center or a spot just outside the gate, coordinated with you in advance. Ask about military pricing when you book.

How do I book, and do I pay anything upfront?

Get your free quote or call us at 800-507-2629 — we're open 6 days a week. There are $0 upfront booking fees: you pay nothing to schedule.

Is my car insured while it's being shipped?

Yes. Every shipment includes insurance coverage while your vehicle is in transit, and we only work with vetted, insured carriers. At pickup, you and the driver document the car's condition together on the bill of lading, which is what protects you if anything comes up along the way.

Can the carrier pick up my car at my home?

Yes — our service is door-to-door wherever a carrier can safely and legally reach. If your street is too narrow for a full-size transport truck, the driver will meet you at a nearby parking lot or wide street, usually within a few minutes of your address.
